A browser page claiming your computer is infected—and telling you to call a phone number—is almost always a scam. Do not call, pay, or grant remote access.
What the page can actually know
A website can display alarming graphics, make noise, enter full-screen mode, and repeat your browser or device type. That does not mean it scanned your Mac or PC.
Close it safely
- Do not click buttons inside the warning.
- Quit the browser. If it will not close, force-quit it.
- Reopen without restoring the suspicious tab.
- Remove notification permission for unfamiliar websites.
- If you installed software or allowed remote control, disconnect from the internet and call a trusted technician.
Never trust the phone number
Apple, Microsoft, Google, and your antivirus company do not place unsolicited support phone numbers inside random webpages. The person answering is part of the scam.
